Trans Am, Why East to West?

Conventional wisdom holds that the prevailing winds are more favorable for a west-to-east TransAm, but I wanted to do it east-to-west. Why?

1. I wanted to ride home. I live near Seattle, which is much closer to Astoria, OR than Yorktown, VA!

2. I didn’t want to deal with shipping my bike home. As it is, this might have been a non-issue, since I took an Amtrak train to Washington, DC and rode to the start of the TransAm, and I could just as easily have done the reverse. However, I didn’t know I was going to take the train when I made the decision!

3. I liked the idea of following the route from older states to newer states (in terms of their settlement by colonizers of European descent).

4. And, most importantly, because I am an early riser, I didn’t want the sun in the eyes of the drivers behind me.

I am sure I will encounter headwinds, and I will probably curse out loud, but I still think I made the right decision!

If the sun is at my back, it isn't in the eyes of the driver behind me!
