Trans Am, Day 86: Wisdom, MT to Hamilton, MT

Yesterday, I remarked on Facebook that my ideal operating temperature is around 85°F. When I pulled into Wisdom, it was about 79°F, and I was feeling chilly, but the locals were all complaining about the heat.

Well, today was worse! It rained for most of my ascent to the top of Chief Joseph Pass, so I was really wet when I got to the top. The descent was dry, the pavement was brand-new, and there was almost no traffic — perfect conditions for what would have been the most amazing descent of my trip. Except I was FREEZING!

I thawed out eventually. The rest of the ride to Hamilton was uneventful. The Bitterroot Valley is pretty, but, for some reason, I never felt moved enough to stop and take pictures. Now I feel a little bad about that.

Tomorrow I’ll reach Missoula, and spend at least a day there, because my eldest daughter lives there! She moved there right after I started this journey, to start her career as a veterinarian, and, as far as I know, I’ve never been to Missoula.

Chief Joseph Pass summit. This side is absurdly easy compared to the other side! I am glad I am going west!

I didn't get these guys' names, but they live in Hamilton, and this is their usual training ride. This pass is perfect for that, with the wide shoulders and very low traffic.
