When I discovered bicycling in 1980, it wasn’t long before I started thinking about what it would be like to ride up the coast (I lived in San Diego then). If you wish, you can read more about my discovery of cycling in my TransAm blog on this site.
The farthest I made it back then was probably Oceanside. I didn’t get farther north than that until 10 years later. Los Angeles, Monterey, San Francisco, the coastal redwoods, distant Oregon and Washington — all of them felt inaccessibly far.
I dimly recall hearing of people riding to San Francisco, which seemed wildly exotic back then (Grateful Dead! Jefferson Airplane! Hippies! LSD!).
Since I resumed cycling in 2014, this tour has been percolating in the back of my mind, and I decided a couple months ago that this was the year for it.
I dusted off my trusty Surly Disc Trucker and started sorting through my touring gear to decide what to bring.
See you on the road!
I am riding alone. I don’t have a schedule, and I expect to leave on September 3.
