Trans Am, Day 65: Guffey, CO to Fairplay, CO

I got an early start this morning, and I am glad I did! Highway 9 is so busy, and it got more and more crowded as the morning continued. And Colorado drivers are still passing too close, even when there is no reason to do so (e.g. long straight road, no cars in the other lane). I’m calmer about it than I was when I first noticed it after leaving Pueblo. I just keep an eye on them in my rear-view mirror. Once, today, someone pulling a camper wasn’t moving over at all, so I just pulled off the road. I didn’t even bother yelling at the driver. I don’t mind stopping if there is a safe place to pull off the road.

The last time I was in Fairplay was probably the mid-80s. I wouldn’t have recognized it. Now it seems to be a stopover for people bound for Breckenridge, and the traffic is ridiculous. I am kind of missing eastern Colorado now!

The picture doesn't do it justice, but when I came over this hill, this enormous shallow valley was breathtaking.

Leo is a 67-year-old Vietnam veteran, and artisan builder of musical instruments, who is just traveling the country in his camper, and isn't sure when he will go home. In his youth, this German traveled with an Irish band, and he's lived everywhere. We talked about life outside this restaurant as the sun warmed us for 30 minutes.

Kelsey, Parker and Brad. I met them coming down highway 9. Brad is doing the TransAm East-to-West, and his wife is supporting him in an RV. I met his wife, Susan, later in Fairplay! His daughter, Kelsey, and son-in-law, Parker, are riding with him for a couple days.
