Trans Am, Day 92: Lowell, ID to Grangeville, ID

Today’s ride yielded a most dramatic change of scenery! Since I left Lolo on US 12, and especially after the Lolo Pass summit, almost to Kooskia (inexplicably, the ‘a’ is not present in the pronunciation), the view has been basically unchanged: River on the left, and pine-covered mountains on either side.

Then, after Kooskia, I got on a road called “Old Stites Stage Road.” I knew it was going to be a challenge as soon as I saw the name, because stagecoaches pre-date highway engineers. Sure enough, it was 10-12% grade for what seemed like miles!

And, when I reached the top, it was rolling hills covered with wheat, which was being harvested, with grain trucks zooming back and forth. The drivers and farmers were all friendly and gave me plenty of room.

I had cell phone service for the first time since I left Lolo, too, so I called my wife, who was hiking in Seattle, so we talked for about an hour, entertaining both of us! Can I just admit: I LOVE HAVING PHONE SERVICE, and I am maybe not cut out for wilderness travel! 😁

I found a very talkative cow: https://www.instagram.com/p/B1MRDPDACST/

I ran into Duane (https://www.instagram.com/downhill_duane/) again, and today he's riding with Sasa (https://www.instagram.com/sasafiction/). Both of them are heading west. All the young tourists use instagram!
