Pacific Coast, Day 2: Anacortes, WA to Port Townsend, WA

I am surprised I haven’t seen any other Pacific Coast bike tourists (except Krista yesterday, but she was headed north). I thought this was the ideal time to start, and I expected to see a few. Maybe they actually started in Vancouver, BC (the official start)?

I did see quite a few local cyclists today, and got friendly waves from all of them, but I didn’t get a chance to talk to anyone. If I had, I would have asked them if they knew my friend Bill, who used to live on Whidbey Island, and whom I met on Cascade Bicycle Club’s RAW (Ride Around Washington).

Highway 20 was noisy and had a ton of traffic, but the shoulder is wide. The climb to the Deception Pass bridge has some narrow spots, and traffic was still heavy, but I never felt like I was in danger.

Today’s ride ranged from the beaches at the eastern shores of the Strait of Juan, to forests, to the farmlands of Whidbey Island, with the sound of jets from the Naval Air Station on Whidbey in the background.

I only stopped at the Coupeville ferry terminal, and didn’t really talk to anyone, so it was a quiet day.

I stopped early, to get a good night’s sleep in Port Townsend.
