  • Trans Am, Day 68, 69, 70: Georgetown, CO to Silverthorne, CO

I spent the last two days visiting friends and old haunts in Georgetown, Colorado. To do this, I had to cross the continental divide two more times, over Loveland Pass, at 11,990 feet. Although it was more climbing, at a higher altitude, than Hoosier Pass, there was much less traffic, so I enjoyed it a lot more.

I spent all of my teenage years in Georgetown, Colorado. In the 1970s, it was a remarkable community, and I plan to write at length about my experiences there, and how it helped form me as a human being, but not today.

Today, I will just say that, despite the fact that so many of my friends are gone, and that, inevitably, it has changed in many ways, large and small, it is still very dear to me, and I am glad I was able to visit it on this journey, almost as a pilgrimage.

These are the steps of the Red Ram apartments, which are no longer used as apartments (I am told). They are very special to me, because my dad sat here many mornings, drinking coffee from The Pretzel (sadly, long-gone). I joined him many times myself, and did so, very self-consciously, on this visit, just for old-times' sake.

I had to split today's ride into two sections, because there was a lane closed for construction, and they shuttled me past the construction zone in a truck. This is part one.
