I am back in Washington! My friend Ben Truelove, who is from this area, met me for this leg of my journey, from Astoria to Kelso. It’s the first time I’ve ridden with someone since Tony and I crossed Loveland Pass. It was fun to have company, and he has a lot of knowledge of the area. He was also willing to ride slowly up the hills, for which I was really grateful! 🚵
This is section of Ocean Beach Highway, which was replaced by the one in the foreground, because the one in the background was too close to the cliffs and kept getting damaged by rock fall and landslides. This bridge is being eaten by trees. An even more dramatic remnant of the old highway.I LOVE how the tree’s roots look like they are part of the rocks!Tool find! Ben saw it too, but I picked it up! 13mm Husky socket! We didn’t realize we were summitting, but, once we saw the sign, I had to take a picture. Not exactly Hoosier Pass!Ben and me waiting for the ferry to Puget Island. My helmet did something weird to my forehead. Maybe it doesn’t need to be so tight? 😁It’s kind of hard to see, but those plants are growing on a log suspended from two posts.A fisherman trying his luck under the ferry dock. The house on the ferry. It’s a new ferry, but much smaller than the ones in Puget Sound. It has to turn completely around, because it isn’t bidirectional, but it basically turns in place. There were four passengers: Me, Ben and two people in a truck. It only costs $3 per person for a bicycle.BenThe land in the center is Puget Island. It’s flat, and is mostly farms. This is definitely the funniest “Welcome to ” sign I’ve seen on this journey, and I love it!Vultures in a tree. There were around 10!Ben made this sign in 1984!This is Trisha and Mara, who live in Seattle and are on their way to Mexico!OK, this just cracked me up! “Got Leaks?” and a flat tire. It’s probably intentional, but still funny.
