I got up early and proceeded to the official start of the TransAm Bicycle Route at Yorktown (The Yorktown Monument).
Most of the route was on on the spectacular Colonial Parkway.
While I was riding along, a car pulled up alongside me, and the driver yelled, “Welcome to Virginia!” I didn’t realize it, but the driver was a blogger friend of my wife’s, whom I had met a few years ago!
We chatted by the side of the road for a few minutes, and I learned that the round purple flowers were Yorktown Onions.
I dipped my rear wheel into the Atlantic Ocean in Yorktown, which was a bit of an ordeal. The sand was really soft, and it was hard to muscle my absurdly heavy bike into position, and there were no other people around to take my picture, so I had to carefully prop my bike up in the wet sand and take a “my bike leaning” picture.
When I got to Chickahominy Riverfront Campground, I was an “old hand.” The desk person started to draw me a map, but I knew exactly where to go!
So, starting today, I am just riding home!
