OK, this feels like the TransAm!
Because I started in Washington DC, and insisted on going to the official start of the TABR in Yorktown, when I headed west, I was retracing my route to the start.
Today, I was excited when I reached the fork in the road where UBSRS 1 and 76 parted ways. From now on, every road is a new road, and every town is a new town.
I decided to stay in Mineral, VA. The ACA map lists the Mineral Volunteer Fire Department as a tent campsite. I called the listed number, but reached a recording. I knocked on the door, but nobody answered. I peered in the window and saw a shirtless man working, so I walked around the back and peered in. As soon as he saw me, the man, who was working on a riding lawn mower, boomed in a friendly voice, “You’re in the right place! Put your tent anywhere in that field, and the bathrooms are through that door!”
After I set up camp, I rode around the town and settled on Joe-Joe’s Super Heroes & Pizza for lunch. The inside was filled with Louise County High School memorabilia and I had a delicious veggie sub with homemade french fries.
I love small towns, and this feels like my first real exposure on this journey.
