Trans Am, Day 23, 24, and 25: Hazard, KY to Booneville, KY

If anyone is not following me on Facebook, you might have wondered where I was the last couple days. In what turns out to have been an overabundance of caution, I stopped in Hazard, KY for a couple days. We are in the middle of a regional storm system, and there were severe weather warnings for thunderstorms and flooding. I holed up in a hotel for a couple days, watching the weather. Yesterday, I realized I should have left, but it was too late in the day, so I left this morning.

It rained for about half my ride, but never very hard. There were no sounds of thunder, and the rivers and creeks were far from the road. I feel kind of silly for being overly cautious, but my wife would kill me if I drowned in a flash flood or got struck by lightning. 😉

When I reached Booneville, I was hoping to stay indoors, but the Bed and Breakfast listed on the ACA map didn’t answer their phone, so I reluctantly decided to stay at the local Presbyterian church.

I should not have been reluctant! I was able to take a cold shower (but the water isn’t very cold here) and figured out how to pitch my tent on concrete so I can stay under the shelter and not get wet. Luxury!

I saw four or five box turtles, but none in the middle of the road, so they didn’t get their picture taken.

I also saw a corn snake, but it got away before I could catch it and take its picture.

BUT! I saw a little orange critter wriggling across the road, and almost crashed (really) stopping the catch it. It turned out to be a Red Eft, which is a young Eastern Red Spotted Newt. He was a sweetheart!
