I had a chance to talk to Willie Weir a few months ago, and he offered this nugget: There are going to be good days on a tour and bad days. I guess this is a bad day.
When I went to sleep last night, I didn’t feel great. I had a headache (I seldom get those), and some digestive problems. A couple hours after I lay down, I woke up shivering with a fever and stomach cramps. I had been planning a long ride today, now that the hills have gotten a little tamer (for now), but now I was wondering if I could even ride.
After dragging myself up, I decided to make it to the next indoor shelter on the ACA map, which looked like about 30 miles. Even sick, that should be easy enough. I wasn’t counting on a stiff headwind, though. All morning I had sustained headwinds – the kind that made the US flags along the road stand straight out, and seemingly almost always from directly in front of me.
So, the 30 miles turned into a bit of a slog, but I made it, and it is amazing how restorative a nice bath is!
I am spending the night in another historic BnB: The Thurman Phillips Guest Home. I am currently writing this in the Sun Room, listening to the wind, and watching the branches sway.
I still don’t feel well, but I no longer have a fever (I think!). I am hoping copious fluids and rest will help me get back to normal quickly!
