Trans Am, Day 40: Ellington, MO to Houston, MO

The rain stopped! I am staying in Houston, Missouri tonight, and the forecast for the next few days definitely looks better than it has: scattered thunderstorms, isolated thunderstorms, etc.

I am not sure where the Ozarks stop, but the hills in the Ozarks, while sometimes steep, are not as bad as the hills in Kentucky, which are steep, narrow and long!

Today, I talked to a couple groups of cyclists on supported West-East tours. I probably looked a little longingly at their unencumbered bicycles. I found myself wondering what it would be like to ride a 20 pound bike on these hills. I think it would feel like flying!

I’m not complaining, though. Riding on a quiet road by myself though these beautiful hills is exactly how I imagined it would be. Even with the pickup trucks hauling ATVs whizzing by 😁.

I didn’t intend to ride 70 miles today. I was going to stop in Summersville, but my rested legs still felt strong, so I decided to push on to Houston, another 22 miles and 1,000 feet of climbing. A headwind picked up that I fought for the rest of the ride, and there were times I regretted my decision, but I was really happy to get to a place where my phone worked again. I am embarrassed to admit how dependent I am on this connection to civilization!

Big sky. Quite a change from the rollers about 30 miles ago!
