Trans Am, Day 55: Walsenburg, CO to San Luis, CO

Today was a hard day. La Veta Pass was cold and I battled a headwind for the first 45 miles.

I have no doubt the altitude is a factor too, which is a little worrisome, since I have four more passes to cross: I will be crossing La Veta Pass again when I return from my trip to Taos, and then Hoosier Pass (11,542 — 2,000 feet higher), and Loveland Pass twice (11,990 — 2,500 feet higher). I am hoping some time in Taos at 7,000 feet will help me acclimate a little.

On the bright side, the highway was amazing. It has wide shoulders, there is a passing lane on the ascent, and very little debris on the shoulders. The roads were luxurious!

Since I am getting closer to New Mexico, I have been craving real New Mexican food, but so far I am out of luck. Tomorrow I expect to reach Taos, and then I know exactly where to go!
