Trans Am, Day 72: Hot Sulphur Springs, CO to Walden, CO

Another day, another continental divide crossing!

I crossed Willow Creek Pass, and it was easy. I couldn’t stop during most of the ascent, though, because it was really cold – I saw the temperature as low as 31.5°F!

Near the top of the pass, I saw a mama moose and a BABY moose! They were really curious about my bike, but as soon as I stopped so I could get a picture, they bolted. A man in a truck was stopped on the other side of them, and we chatted. He offered to send me a picture. I hope he does!

The mosquitoes are voracious here. You can’t stop moving or they converge on you ravenously. I am covered with 99% DEET, head to toe, and I still think they got me a few times.

I am sitting in my tent while the rain outside is pouring down. There are five motels in town, but none had vacancies, so I am camped in the city park.

Highway 125 has stress cracks which cross the width of the road that make my heavy bike rattle like a train on uneven tracks. It is uncomfortable and a little maddening. Every once in a while there is fresh pavement that doesn’t have these cracks, and they are so welcome!
