Trans Am, Day 44: Pittsburg, KS to Chanute, KS

I hit 2,000 miles today! Even though Kansas is hot and windy, it is still faster than eastern Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri!

I saw a cool insect crossing the road, but I was too slow to stop and get my camera ready. It was a DUNG BEETLE, rolling a little ball of DUNG! I have never seen one, and would have loved to get some video of it. I am watching for them now!

Like yesterday, the winds were mostly from due south, which means cross-winds on an east-west route. But as you can see, I had several miles of riding due north. It was delightful!

I stopped at the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum on the recommendation of my friend William. It documents the adventures of two adventurers who are famous for African documentaries and photographic safaris. It was a fun excursion, and gave me an excuse to stay in a nearby motel instead of camping in this absurdly hot weather.

Wunderground says it feels like 111°F (44°C). I think that's about right! It's not as bad when I am riding, but standing around or walking is pretty miserable.

Neosho River. You can see submerged trees along the banks, so it must still be high.

Unfortunately, I forgot his name, but the guy in white lives on Whidbey Island, and is on his way to Yorktown. The guy in the yellow Trek jersey is the last TransAm racer - Adam Bendinsky (https://www.facebook.com/adam.bendinsky).
