Trans Am, Day 45: Chanute, KS to Eureka, KS

I started riding at 4:45 AM (sunrise was at 6:02 AM), to beat the heat, and it was a great decision! It was 72°F and there were no cars!

I rode more than half of today’s ride with Jeff and Glen, who are doing the TransAm with “Bike the US for MS” (https://ride.biketheusforms.org/event/2019-transamerica-ride/e204083). As much as I enjoy riding alone, it was fun to ride with them. We all rode roughly the same speed, and it was fun to get to know them a little. I hope I see them again.

They’re with the group I saw in Ellington, MO (https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?page_id=582036) a few days ago, and I was passed by two of the riders from that day yesterday and today.

I have been seeing these riders with their matching jerseys, and the support vehicle, for a few days, but they’re probably going to get way ahead of me soon, because they’re doing a few 100 mile days and I won’t be.

Unfortunately, I lost most of the pictures I took today, and I don’t know why! They’re just missing from my phone. Oh well.

Dawn near Chanute, Kansas.

I met Ken and Bob at the Copper Kettle in Eureka. They're riding east to Yorktown, but they are from Camano Island! Small world!

My new Bike the US for MS friends (L to R): JD, Jeff, Adam and Glen. I rode with Jeff and Glen for at least thirty miles, but JD and Adam showed up as we were rolling into Eureka. Adam ran over a dead, but largely intact, armadillo. The riders behind him thought he did it on purpose, but it was because he was looking at his phone. Fortunately, he didn't crash. Unfortunately, we don't have video of the incident.
