Trans Am, Day 26: Booneville, KY to Berea, KY

Virginia hates shoulders, but perhaps not as much as Kentucky loves rumble strips!

Three things have made me curse out loud in the last two days.

First, there are these little bugs that hover right in front of your face on long climbs. If you try to bat them away, they leave for a couple seconds and then come right back. I have wished every possible evil on these little bugs, even though they never land, and don’t bite or sting. Bill Shaneyfelt: what are these little demons?

Second, these 10% grade hills. At least they are getting shorter!

Third, the relentless rumble-strips! I know they serve a good purpose, but they are simply a hazard for cyclists on narrow roads.

I met Adam outside a convenience store. He was with his 17-year-old golden retriever, Tyson. I forgot to get a picture of Tyson, but we hung out for a while. Adam’s love for his friend was all-consuming. I understand.

It rained most of the day. My fingers were wrinkled like they do when you stay in the pool too long. At times it rained really hard, but it is so warm, and I was already completely soaked, so it didn’t matter.

I decided to stay at the Boone Tavern Hotel, which is owned by Berea College. I am so glad I did. I had never heard of Berea College, but it is a wonderful institution. Liberal arts College, founded by abolitionists, charges no students tuition, all students work. Every time I think about it, I get a little emotional. I blame fatigue. 😉
